(Time check: 3-4 minutes)
It has been a long while since I last posted in my blog. Or should I say it has been quite a while since I last reviewed a movie. Call it lack of time or some kind of letharginess when it comes to writing, due to my quite tight work schedules, I've been unsuccessful many a times to put my thoughts together in a readable format. Finally, I decided that it's high time I looked into this issue and so here I am, doing what best I can, given the limited time at my disposal.
Here are a few songs that have captivated my heart and I have tried to bring out the best possible way of commenting (praising) on them... right from the conception ... the picturisation... till the choreography... all those ingredients of the songs that have made me look at them several times with the same level of awe...!!!

In recent times, especially in regional cinema, songs are merely 'inserted' in a movie for various obvious reasons. Only few directors venture into using the songs as an integral part of their story-telling. I would like to start my list with one such song.
I don't think u can get to see a better conception (and execution) of a song. In my opinion, it's as professionally made as an entire movie. And that too, you could realise this right from the very first frame. The way the camera zooms out of the railway tunnel... the soul-searching tune to begin with... and to better them all, the beautifully penned lyrics... everything has been perfectly conceived that one could immediately sense the central theme of the song - it's about a man... in 'search' of his lady love. Giving cinematic liberty to the creator in bringing out such an audacious side of his hero (as he has ventured out with just a postal letter in his hand), I would say, to his credit, this is a far more practical and down-to-earth conception than the one you could come across in a recent top's director's flick, where the hero crosses (in fact flies) miles to find his girl.
Precisely speaking, apart from the situation that leads to the song, what brings credibility to the theme is the lyrics that goes hand in hand with the visuals. In a typical melodious song that is picturised purely with natural montage shots, both the lyrics (if not the music) and the visuals don't gel well, at all times. They just carry the central theme forward, but in more or less disjoint manner. As an audience, we don't actually notice this, as we are normally engrossed in following what the visuals are trying to say, leaving behind the lyrics in the process. But this is one such beautiful song, where every technician has given their best to make the lyrics and visuals complement well each other.
For instance, in one part of the song, where the hero takes her home on her cycle, there's one poignant moment when she touches his shoulder. Poignant because for a person who is literally like an orphan, here's a girl who kind of assures him that she's there for him. Thanks to the brilliant teamwork both off and on screen, this beautiful feel has been brilliantly brought out for us, the viewers. This is just a sample i have quoted and there are many such poignant moments that I leave to the readers to find it out yourself.
If one searches for the reason that has actually enabled the writer to pen the lyrics so aptly, you would tumble upon the fact that the song is actually used in the film as two halves. Ofcourse, this is not the case of the 'la la laa... la la... la la laa' tune you could see in a famous family director's products. Each half of the song has its own separate internal theme and so, in a way it has been easier for the creators to give life to each and every word in the song. To divulge more on this, while the first half deals with the search and the ultimate union of the hero with his girl, the latter part deals with the feelings of the love-struck, (economically) weak couple on their journey together. To their credit, each half serve well their intended purpose.
Another important reason why as an audience you might get so attached with the song is the Maestro's voice that has rendered it. While his voice isn't one of those sweet, soothing-to-ears ones you could come across, one can't deny the fact his voice is so mesmerizing that no one can haunt u better, in a heart-warming song like this. Full marks to his son for asking his dad to croon for this number and more marks to him for giving a such an apt score to top it all.
So, there they are... the reasons why like the song very much. A kind of tribute to all those people who have planned and worked so meticulously together to give life to this beautiful song.
The next time around, I would be coming up with a chart-busting number of the year, letting you know its possible connections with the Lee-Hesh pair and Goundamani. What does a tamil song have to do with Lee-Hesh? I guess that should keep you eagerly on your toes until next time... see u
P.S: I would like to take this opportunity to salute those brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for the sake of others. May their families get all the needed support to carry on with their lives.
Yes Prabhu na. It is truly a great song ...
ReplyDeleteNot only this Song, the movie "Katrathu Tamil" is a Master Stroke.
ReplyDeleteThe movie is now more than a year old, and new year is about to begin, even then, the song made the author to pen this blog. That clearly shows that this movie is a landmark and it will remain over the times to come.
Prabu, Keep writing..
