After a long hiatus, here I am... doing one of the things i like the most... I guess from here on, this blog would be updated more frequently than in the past.
This time around, I would like to continue on something that i had started some (or actually long) time back. For the sake of continuity u can check this post -
or, to give it to you in a nutshell, I had written about a song that had captivated my heart - right from its conception, the picturisation, the choreography and so on... This time around I wish to comment about one of the most popular songs Kollywood has churned out in recent years- Nakka Mukka from the movie Kadhalil vizhunthen (காதலில் விழுந்தேன் )
Firstly, I should commend the music director, Vijay Antony for self-proclaiming at the very beginning of the song that it is gonna be a 'massive' hit of the year. It shows the immense faith he had in this song / the tune and for goodness sake, his faith has only garnered him more praise than he would have ever thought of...
But contrary to his faith, personally, I would say I wasn't gung-ho about the song, as soon as I heard it. Several reasons could be attributed to it - like I was first introduced to the female voice over (which I still don't like), or the hysterical lyrics the song boasts of. However, gradually as time passed, it slowly began to capture my attention, like how a trademark Rehmanian tune does... Seems like there is something in it that has captured thousands of hearts like mine. No wonder, the beats and the chorus held their position in my heart, reverberating constantly in my sub-conscious mind, during that period.
To add to this, the awe over this song only increased once the film was out, as the video finally caught my attention. Kudos to the choreographer for not spoiling the initial hype created by the audio and if one goes by the public perception, the commercial success of the film could in a way be attributed to the exuberance that exists in the song.
While the choreographer has made sure that all the steps are engaging and fast-paced, as demanded by the song, something that has fascinated me are the inspirations that seemed to have led to some neatly-choreographed steps. For instance, the famous chest bumps of our Lee-Hesh pair can be seen to be prominently utilized throughout the whole song. I guess the choreographer should be a tennis aficionado or to say the least, should have caught a glimpse of some Davis cup matches during that period, to have been inspired by.
Yet another interesting inspiration seems to have come from the backyard of Kollywood itself. Who can forget the signature step of good old Goundamani and the moment it comes on screen, i bet if anyone can control the laughter... Quite surprisingly, the step has been so well customized that, when you see it in the song, you could seldom differentiate it from other interesting steps employed in the song. It is one of those instances, which manifests the fact that even a simple movement can be choreographed neatly, if one wishes to.
It would not be fair to wind up my adulations for the choreographer (for his good job) by not justifying his cameo appearance in the middle of the song, like most choreographers do these days. This has been recently spoofed in a recent (Tamizh) film, with not much of a thinking. Personally, I feel these talented people have the fundamental right to share some lime-light when opportunities arise. While there are many such unsung heroes working behind the scenes for the betterment of a film, I don't feel it as an issue for the choreographers to grab such chances, they are fortunately blessed with. The fact of the matter is, very few heroes (like Hrithik, Vijay, Simbu...) give more than 100% of what a choreographer does, while nothing much can be said of the rest of the lot...
Having said that, the hero of this film, Nakul (the same chubby, round fellow from 'Boys') has done good justice to the job that has been entrusted in him. While its clear that he has shed lots of weight post the Boys period, I'm sure he would have lost a wee bit more during the shooting of this song :-) Hardwork reaps its own benefits and quite fittingly, the efforts of Nakul have resulted in what could definitely be one of the most popular songs of his career. He is quite fortunate to get such good opportunities to show his skills in his very first film, as a solo hero.
To wind up, while I still haven't got what the lyric-writer means with the initial lines of this song :-), this still remains as one of the favourites in my heart, for many good reasons as I have shared it with you...
