The proverbial question one is asked after watching a movie is 'What is the story'? Among the noted films, the story can be summarized as a one-liner or may be paraphrased in a nutshell. Of late, some of the trend-setting films have been centered on a single event, thereby leading the audience to a whirlwind of What? When? and How? the event happened. Among these genres,Vikram Vedha is one unique movie - yes, it does centre on a single event and moves around; yet, it is also intelligently interspersed with couple of stories or sub-plots, orchestrated much like the famous Vikramadityan-Vedalam stories. Is this story-telling worth-watching on the big screen?
For brief-spoilers, Vikram-Vedha depicts a cat and mouse game played between an encounter specialist and a gangster. The movie revolves around the event of the encounter of one of the members related to the gangster. It is definitely one of the above-average movies to have released in 2017. There can be no iota of doubt in it. But, given the violence backdrop, it can be safe to say family audience have not much to lose if they stay put at home. However, if you brave yourself to a sensory treat, this movie will not disappoint you.
Among the accolades this movie deserves, the prime ones would be the taut screenplay and the non-linear way of story-telling. To the makers' (husband-and-wife duo) credit, all the flashback stories are told in a refreshing way that they never slacken the movie's pace. There is seldom a dull moment for the audience to sit back, which is one of the main reasons why you don't get an opportunity to second-guess 'what will happen next'. Twists and turns at every other reel maintains the interest level throughout. Ofcourse, some cinematic freedom has been taken here and there to tie the knots together. But these don't seem completely unacceptable either.
As far the acting is concerned, kudos to the lead pair of Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathy for portraying their roles to the 'T'. When you sympathize for both of them at the end, it is not just because of their characterization, it is also because how they have brought life to them. Simple, yet hard-hitting and entertaining dialogues (written by one of the co-actors, Manikandan) add to the sheen of the movie. Engaging background score and songs by the new composer, Sam must also be applauded.
In a nutshell, Vikram Vedha is definitely a notch above the recently released trend-setting movies. It opens and closes with the same interest and enthusiasm from the audience (thanks to the open-ended climax). If you can stomach a bit violent, well-enacted drama, go for it. At the end, you will have enough to answer the question 'What is the story?'. More importantly, in today's world of GST, every penny/tax spent on this movie is sure-shot paisa vasool.
